Your Search Console Is a Market Research Tool You’re Ignoring

Most marketing teams still think about search the way they did ten years ago: someone types a query, clicks your link, lands on your page, maybe converts. Traffic in, revenue out. Clean equation. For a long time, it worked.

It doesn’t work like that anymore.

Between Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, and Perplexity answering questions right on the results page, a huge share of searches never turn into a visit at all. The person gets their answer and moves on. No click, no landing page, nothing showing up in your analytics. If you’re still measuring search purely by traffic, it looks like the channel is dying.

The click was never really the point. The question was.

Here’s the reframe: every search query is a tiny, unsolicited piece of market research. Someone typed exactly what was on their mind, in their own words, with no filter and nothing to gain from being polite about it. That’s rarer and more honest than most surveys or focus groups you could run.

When someone clicks through to your site, you get a session. When they don’t — when Google just answers them directly — you still get the query. You still know what they asked, how they phrased it, often how many other people asked the same thing that week. The visit disappears. The signal doesn’t.

So the real shift isn’t “search stopped working.” It’s that the thing search was always good for — showing you what people actually want to know — is now the main thing it’s good for, instead of a side effect of driving traffic.
